Mr. Schoonmaker graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Yale College in 1958 and from Yale Law School in 1961.  He joined Cummings & Lockwood's Stamford Office in 1961 as an associate attorney.  He became a partner, in 1970, and was named to the firm's Executive Committee in 1981.  He was Co-managing Partner from 1987 until 1990, Managing Partner from 1990-1991 and acting Managing Partner through 1994.  He has practiced family law from 1967 to the present.  He is past Chairman of the American Bar Association Family Law Section, as well as the past Chairman of the Connecticut Bar Association Family Law Section.  He served the American Bar Association Family Law Section as a delegate to the ABA House of Delegates.  He was Chairman of the Connecticut Child Support Commission from 1984 through 1986.  He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and has served on the Board of Managers of its Connecticut Chapter.  He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  He has served on several editorial boards and published numerous articles in the family law field.  He has participated as a speaker at a large number of seminars and institutes on family law issues.  He is named as one of the nation's best matrimonial attorney's in Naifeh and Smith's "Best Lawyers in America."*  Mr. Schoonmaker and his wife, Carolyn, reside in Darien.
